Mobile Commerce moves foward through Sprint and mShopper

It would seem another brick in the foundation of mCommerce has been laid.

Sprint announced the formation of their own shopping portal available to Sprint customers using their data plan.

Sprint has partnered with mShopper to create the service which will allow consumers to puchase items directly through their mobile phone. Using a single account, once billing information is entered, a consumer can continually purchase new goods as they wish using a simple login.

This is the first marketplace created by a major US carrier and probably not the last. Mobile commerce, a phenom in other parts of the world is still catching on in the United States. However Forester research predicts a growing presence, predicting $2Billion in revenues in 2010.

Personally I am starting to pay attention to this. A couple of years ago it seemed an odd fit because of small, low resolution screens and lengthy waits on information. However, the season feels right for strong growth, especially when you have people like Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, saying he expects mobile advertising to one day outpace PC based advertising.

So after 2 years of reflection, I am definitely changing my mind and jumping on the bandwagon. After-all, reviewing some old quotes, we should all be reminded it’s never too late to change perspectives. As an illustration, I have a special place in my heart for this prediction:

“Remote shopping, while entirely feasible, will flop – because women like to get out of the house, like to handle merchandise, like to be able to change their minds.” – THE FUTURISTS: Looking Toward A.D. 2000, TIME Magazine, 2/25/1966

Yeah, about that…
